The Rehabilitation the Siddhis
The Siddhis, the migrants from Africa were the treasures of the erstwhile Nawab of Junagadh brought to the shores Gujarat in the 17th Century, since then they made Saurashtra their homeland. In 1993 with a view to help the community's socio-economic aspects and train them to lead a better life free from liquor drinking, gambling and uplift their overall status in the society GRISERV-BAIF chalked out a Five- Point Programme. The programme focused at bringing the community close to agriculture:
Training and empowering women through Income generating activities viz. nursery raising, vegetable cultivation and dairy activities.
Provide education and generate awareness and make them active participants of the development programmes by creating their own self-help groups and local committees.

This year new 25 primitive Tribal families joined with 112 families of old batch for horticulture plantation programme in the Talala taluka (Junagadh District).

Following activities are undertaken
Raising mango orchards through agri-horti-forestry practices on 1 acre wasteland popularizing the Wadi Programme, which encourages families and provide technical and financial assistance
Distribution of dairy animals & Training.
Assistance in vegetable cultivation.
Establishment of lift irrigation system.
Formulation of credit societies and self-help groups for Women.
Empowering women.

Under review, 8 Women Self-Help Groups are satisfactorily functioning with a seed contribution amounting to Rs. 1,505,28 collected through various activities, saving & credit system they have managed.

The awareness generation programmes and the income generating and the other socio-economic activities have reduced the felling of trees, protecting the environment; raised the confidence levels among the Sidhhis, improved their livelihood uplifting their socio-economic status - staying in concrete build houses; children going to school and seeking more financial aid to develop the upcoming generation.
Total 139 families were benefited. During the final stage of programme in the year 2001-02 and 2002-03 25 families developed their Wadi each year for long term development. They have planted 40 mangos, 25 coconut and 400 forest plants in each Wadi. In this wadi there was a survival rate of 75% mangos and 90% forest plants were found.  Great change of improvement in the life of Siddi people of this area was noticed.
