Livestock Development Programme
The programme is implemented through a network of cattle breeding centers and aims at directly contributing to increased milk production, use the state-of-the-art technology with high quality inputs such as frozen semen of high genetic bulls, like Holstein, Jersey, Murrah, Surti & Jafrabadi. Integrated approaches with feed forward extension supporting disease investigation, vaccination and nutritional advice, training local youth in operation and maintenance have resulted in building the confidence levels of the rural community at large. The basic objective of the programme is to create Income generating activities by increasing cattle productivity.
The Programme is fully supported by the Rural Development Department, government of Gujarat, through various District Rural Development Agencies.
Crossbred Cows, Best milk producer
The Livestock Development Module developed in co-ordination with the Cattle Breeding Centers enhanced the production of milk and milk products in the dairy sector. Each Centre equipped with a set of liquid Nitrogen (LN2) containers; stock of semen doses motorcycle for providing doorstep services to farmers and required infrastructure facilities to about 1000 - 1200 families.

This was possible by using improved breeding services provided that improved the genetic potential of the existing livestock. Improving nutritional levels through increased fodder production, and propagating preventive health measures for the livestock through awareness generation programmes. During the year 13,669 families have been benefited and since inception 1,83,157 families 65% of these families belong to the IRD group benefited from the programme.

Aim and objective of the programme.

v      Dairy farming is a reliable source of livelihood for small and marginal farmers. Development of good quality dairy animals is a powerful tool for gainful self employment and sustainable income of the rural poor. Here non descript cattle are improved through cross breeding by providing services of artificial insemination at their doorsteps.

v      Integrated approach with extention and training for animal husbandry activities with cattle owner like breeding services, fodder development, nutritional advice and health care of animals. Active interactions to generate awareness, motivation and effective technology transfer by holding sexual health camps, deworming and vaccination camps for animals and a close follow-up and impact assessment which improve the performance, build confidence in farmers and enhance income there by improving quality of life and social status of rural poor.

Main objective of cattle development programme is, dairy farming being a traditional practice of rural farmers. It has the potential to provide gainfull self-employment and sustainable income at the doorsteps of the rural poor without involving any risk and shift from their present occupation. Realising the opportunities to convert their liabilities into assets. In this programme the rural families are motivated to breed their low productive non descript cattle with high milk yielding genetically superior breeds from our farms by A.I. resulting in to the birth of crossbreds i.e. KAMDHENU a boon for rural poor. These services like artificial inseminatios, pregnancy diagnosis and awareness to modern animal husbandry practices through extentions are given at the door steps of farmers. Their by crossbred H.F. and Jersey cows and good buffalos like Murrah, Surati and Jafarabadi are produced.

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, President of India visited
“ Calf Relly ” of Cattle Development Center,
Chaudha of Dhruva. (BAIF)

Our center is looking after 2000 to 2500 families. Due to semen of high pedegree bulls and good technical skill of BAIF.The progeny born are giving good milk yield i.e 2100 liters of milk in Jersey cross and 2500 litters of milk in H.F.crossbred animals.Due to different types of activities and Health awareness programmes the incidences of contagious diseases in animals are minimised. During the year under report 11,658 families took the benefit of Artificial Inseminatiuon and uptill now 1,94,815 Families are covered out of which 65% are BPL families.

“ KAMDHENU “A BOON TO RURAL POOR.

Sadasiv Ramjibhai Vasva is a poor farmer was leaving with hardship having less land and no irrigation facility for production of crops. His cow delivered a H.F.cross female calf, which was inseminated by BAIF center. Our center I/C. guided him for proper care of calf. This calf matured and it was inseminated by this centre and calf delivered at 3.5 years of age.Today this calf is in second lactation. She gave 3080 Lit.of milk in first lactation and earned Rs. 23,040.  In her second lactation she gave 3200 Lit.of milk and earned Rs.25,600. Llike wise Mr. Sadasiv received handsome amount of income from this crossbred calf and he is happy now. He has utilised his income from milk for his daughter’s marriage, he constucted his house and purchased the necessory house hold goods. Now he is in a position to maintain his family. He realised the present change of his status and has observed self satisfaction from a “KAMDHENU “.

Impact of C.D.P. in Gujarat:

  • Milk producation in 1st generation have recorded up to 2200 liter/lact. in Jersey & 2400 Liter/Lact. in H.F.

  • Age of 1st calving has been recorded as 34-36 month

  • Inter calving period in indegenous  animals from 21  months has been drop down to 16-18 month due to genetic upgradation of animals & improved management practice.

  • Milk days have gone up to 290-310 Days.

Changes observed with Dairy Farming System

  • Feeding practices improved

  • Use of chaff cutter to reduced wastage

  • Sylage making / Urea Treatment is increased during recent years

  • Use of feeding Mangers in shed.

  • Vaccination & Deworming of animals as a regular practice (60-75 % farmers use it )

  • Use  of AI is increased now avoding direct Bull service.

  • Keeping  reserve a smal plot for green fodder through out the year.

  • Animals are treated timely.

  • Milk sale in local Market increased.

Economic gain due to CDP.

  • Women are getting daily income of Rs. 30-40/Animal as a net return per day.  They can use the money for day to day Expenditure.

  • One cow can produce net profit of Rs. 6000-7000/Yr to the family. This is in addition to their normal income.

  • More Nos. of lact. in life time which produces more milk.(i.e. 6-7 lact. in life time.

Animal Health and Disease Surveillance Programme
GRISERV established two laboratories in Mehsana and Valsad districts with the financial support form the District Milk Co.op. Union These Diagnostic Centers are helping dairy farmers in the surrounding areas to enhance their milk production through adequate health care programmes; supported preventive measures; provided training and referral services and diagnosed diseases that are widely spread among animals. The labs also tackle repeat breeding processes and adopted techniques, which increased milk production in milch animals. As a result, under the Disease, Surveillance and Extension Scheme, 80 villages were covered from 4-Livestock Development Centers of Mehsana district & 40 villages were covered from Valsad district during 2001-02.

Manibhai desai Technology Transfer Centre.{MDTTC}

Dr. Manibhai desai technology Transfer Centre {MDTTC} Started in the month of May 1996, wth the aim to increase milk production and to develop Preventive Animal Health Management System. This programme is run by BAIF with financial support of Vasudhara Development Mandal.

Dr.Manibhai Desai Technology Transfer Centre [MDTTC.]  is having   44 Multi Activity Centres during the year 2003-2004. The working activities of the centres are to provide Artificial Inceminatios services, Pregnancy diagnosis, Vaccinations for prevention of diseases, to arrange an animal health camps and Infertility camps to improve the cattle development activities for the  animals of local  people. To do this type of activites by the people this centre will train the local persons for A.I. services and other above activities. Then this trained person will act as a “Change Agent” and he will do all these activities and this services will be provided on the“charge bases “as  source of income generation activities for local persons..During the year under report total A.I. is 48085,out of which 19438 are pregnant and from this 9408 Female calves are born by these 44 Multi activities centrs.Looking to the satisfactory working of this programme this actvities are sanctioned for the next year i.e. 2004-05

Eye catching Achievement of -

  1. Presently 250 villages Dairy coro in Valsad district are taking advantage of this programme.
  2. Farmers are taking keen interest in calf Rearing.
  3. Resulting in to good growth rate (about 500 gram/Day/Animal)
  4. Age of 1st Calving have been recorded as 29-30 months in 1st lot of Hiefers, due to our progaramme  cow monitoring.
  5. More farmers have participated in growing green fodder production programme.

Other activities undertaken were: preventive vaccination; disease surveillance and diagnosis; blood profile for mineral intake in relation to soil; feed and forages to take care of nutritional problems; sexual health control; and udder management. As a result diseases incidences reduced in general and in particular the FMD outbreaks were totally eliminated.
